For those of you that graced the Family Industries gallery/warehouse this past Friday night, you are privy to the rawking good time that was had.  For those of you who missed out (be it an Edward Sharpe show, a Lakers loss or a grad-school final project), shame on you.  Get your priorities straight.

BV homie and screen-printing extraordinaire, Billy Bishop (of Obsolete Industries), provided a colorful and extensive display of original artwork for sale and for the viewing pleasure upon entry to the event.  Many folks took advantage of the generously priced gems and went home with new sweet prints to hang in their own dwellings.

Tito’s Vodka, Duvel beer, Topo Chico Mineral Water and Honest Tea provided free-flowing liquid treats for those who chose to indulge in the hosted bar while new BV comrades, Royal Elastics, doled out free kicks for lucky raffle winners throughout the night. (Imagine that, free goodies at a BV event!)

But the belle of the ball, and the reason for this night’s being, was the live screen-printing exposition.  The generous gents of Family provided their services to ensure that all who attended left with an original design printed on an article of clothing of their choosing; be it a skimpy ladies tank, a hoodie, a tee, or thrift-store-purchased knickers (gross?).  There were 20 different designs to be had, spawned from the minds of the Family team, the BV brethren, Junk Food Clothing, and the students of Room 13 LA, a self-sustaining art studio out of South Central and benefactors of the night’s donations.

And if all of that wasn’t enough to satisfy your ADD-compulsions, there was a graffiti-tagged photo booth, raging ping pong battles, old-school letter pressing and rafter raising musical beats coming from DJ’s In the Vein and Hatbox all night. Damn, what a party.

So moral of the story is, “Plan accordingly next time the Bagavagabonds put together a lineup like this so you can join in on the rawking good time!”

Designed as a test shoot for the upcoming Terrence Malick film project, Eli kept his game tight, as the two made their way through Austin's beloved Mohawk venue for the better part of an hour. Betwixt the swooning stares and sweet nothings whispered, Eli brought Rooney over to the Sony Music Unlimited activation, where the BV boys were screen printing some goodies. Bobby Blumer and Steven Hykes were happy to help and assist as Rooney not only got a crash course on the live art form, but a souvenir tote to boot. Not bad for a day at the BV office.

This past Saturday night, Bagavagabonds invited LA out to the Venice Boardwalk to cozy up on the couches of the Cadillac Hotel. 101 projected images of Angelinos  propped up on the discarded furniture of their neighborhoods rotated between two screens in the transformed art-deco lobby. The room popped with color and characters as long-time locals came out to represent their corners of the city. 

Artists Kurt Gohde and Kremena Todorova mixed and mingled throughout, gathering even more stories and insight into the diversity of the city that exemplifies their project's purpose.

Ice-cold frothies courtesy of Black Star Beer kept conversations sailing while Vita Coco waters hydrated the thirsty bunch, including local boardwalk legend TREEMAN.

DISCARDED: L.A. is an installation that includes 101 projected photographs of people sitting on discarded sofas and easy chairs from all around L.A., taken by Lexington, Kentucky-based artists Kurt Gohde and Kremena Todorova during their June 16-25, 2011 visit to Los Angeles.

  “More than a collection of images, words, and sounds, however, DISCARDED aims to bring together communities that frequently don’t know about each other’s existence. This happens both by seeing the images and by attending the events that surround them.”

THE HISTORY

DISCARDED: L.A. is part of an evolving social experiment through photography that got its blue-grassroots start in Lexington, Kentucky (where the artists Kurt and Kremena are professors at Transylvania University). After a successful show of Lexington locals posted up on their discarded curbside couches at the Land of Tomorrow Gallery in Lexington in 2010, the artistic duo brought their creative talents to L.A. in search of creating a city portrait built on communal collaboration and forgotten furniture.

THE SKINNY

DISCARDED: L.A. is open to the public for one night of mischievous shin-digging. In true Bagavagabonds fashion, BV will bring the Cadillac Hotel gallery alive on Saturday night, February 25th from 6-11pm, by packing the joint full of LA’s cultural tastemakers. With a hosted bar, jiving music and plenty of mingling, the DISCARDED installation will take on a new life of its own.

This past weekend, the Bagavagabonds transformed their quaint residential headquarters into a snug one-night art-gala scene for the first ever Art Bang! From front porch pickin' and singin' by BV's The Drakes to the outdoor garden bar filled with delectable drinks (courtesy of Black Star Beer, Moonshine Whiskey, Metl Mezcal and Prometheus Springs), the mood was set for prime art viewing and communal conversations for the 200+ that moseyed through the comfortable confines.

Six talented BV family friends were featured on the walls. Front and center through the opened door, artist Rachelle Flauta mixed and matched mediums in her delicately dark layered works. Hillel Smith provided his sprayed stencil style while Miriam Dafford collaged canvases with actual stencils in addition to her 'put a bird on it' play. Orville Stoeber's collection of assemblage from the unpredictable streets of Venice gave the show colorful dimension and texture. Dalmiro Quiroga  brought the contrast by displaying sharp black and white photographs filled with energized subjects and Teodoro Vecchione presented a charming collection of his convivial ink and watercolor illustrations. And to round the room off, BV unleashed a new series of letter-pressed poster prints and quirky cards to fit and flow with any occasion...

In addition to the featured artists, the students of Room 13 Los Angeles shared the gallery walls, showing off their imagination, collective talents, personal progress and execution skills. Their pieces made animated statements through the use of color and composition, creating a buzz of amazement from the gallery goers of the evening.

The stylized coziness of a throwback house show combined perfectly with the selection of cold bevies, inspiring art and artists alongside a musical backdrop that swooned both the young and old in attendance… creating the best Art Bang! for your buck, anywhere in town.

The Bagavagabonds are kicking off the 2012 year with a sudden loud noise, a new series based off the Art Explosion! theory and principal. The Art Bang! is a front-porch style gallery show intended to evoke a sudden burst of action from the artist within by providing a sense of excitement through a thrilling night of art, music and camaraderie. The BV crew has been working diligently to transform the home office into this fitting venue.

The featured artists: Orville Stoeber, Miriam Dafford, Rachelle Flauta, Hillel Smith, Dalmiro Quiroga, Teodoro Vecchione and Room 13 Students have been creating and working at length to provide all in attendance a true value returned for the investment spent on buying their art the night of show. All pieces will be affordably and accessibly priced between $50-$250… the best Art Bang! for your buck anywhere in town.

Monday night, the Bagavagabonds ruffled their rolodex to bring together a last minute Separate City night to help the Basement Tavern raise money for Movember, a hairy affair benefiting men's cancer awareness.  Assembling a cast of bands from mellow to mind melting, SC hosted the return and secret teeth cutting show of Evan Koga (formerly of Chief). After the break up of Chief in early summer, Koga has been working on his next incarnation and unveiled some great new material for the early crowd.

Second up, The Withers - a stand in for a sick Gothic Tropic. Usually when dealing with a replacement band you're left with a lingering feeling of "Yeah they were good. Wish (fill in the blank) would have played…" But The Withers wiped BV's mind clean of such thoughts, delivering a set full of shawl wrapped rock-n-roll while raising the energy in the room. Then for the night cap, Manicorn, a two-member band, blasted the volume and intensity of all the "Occupy (insert city name here)" protests combined throughout the SC encampment, securing a truly mellow to madness Monday for Movember. Done and done.

The students from ROOM 13 will have their top-notch works for sale as well; so bring a wad of cash for this walk. And in true BV collaborative style, there will be plenty of live art activations in our nook, from poster and Tee screening to the popular Color Me series, so pack a lunch and mosey down our way and say, ‘hey.’
