How The West Was Won

“CALIFORNIA is the place you ought to be…” and it sang true on June 18th. The Bagavagabonds officially kicked off the summer with their CALIFORNIA Art Explosion!, their 6th in the open-ended series.

With a Golden State themed night, there was plenty of fun-in-the-sun artwork for sale, including 35 original pieces from the students of ROOM 13 LA – the beneficiaries of the evening’s silent art auction. And California theme’n songs rang out from the stage; one pop hit at-a-time, as BV’s own Crooners, The Drake’s and family friends Risers strummed their six-strings to an adoring crowd of twisting and shouting fans. Then, Californian born-and-bred Just MATTER rattled the rafters with a hard-core set on the turntables, turning the party up-a-notch and tempting all those in attendance to split their pants on the dance floor!

For those needing to step outside to take a breather (and patch their pants), the 5 for 50 film tent highlighted the Bagavagabonds footage from the Red Bull Soap Box Derby Race LA, including a photo timeline and the wrecked Rat-Rod itself.

Also under the stars, the K-Swiss Mini-Golf Hole tested party patrons’ hand-eye coordination as they toed the line and aimed for the 6-foot tennis-themed windmill/lighthouse in the center of the California-shaped course. Hole-in-One or bust.

And if that wasn’t enough, artist Miriam Dafford created an 8’x8’ interactive photo booth backdrop, incorporating the California Grizzly (and lots of Velcro and felt). Each photo was unique and stylized, tapping into one’s Mr. Potato Head skills. Colin Young-Wolff clicked, snapped and dodged spraying cans of suds while once again putting his expert touch on the night’s fashionable folk (CLICK for the full gallery).

Yes, apparently, CALIFORNIA does know how to party and The Falls made sure that those who were thirsty throughout had a delicious drink in their hand from the hosted bar.  Special thanks to those at Maker’s Mark, Metl Mezcal & Tequila, PBR, Prometheus Springs, Hansen’s and Red Bull for supplying the ultimate bar.

Thank you to all the BV supporters, family and friends for sharing in an event that incorporated the CALIFORNIA dream. The night was made possible by: K-Swiss, Scion, Arts Continuum and Stage Labs Production Services – we couldn’t have done it without you!

A grip more photos from the night can be found HERE - cheers.

(Thanks Rodji for the party pics!)
